Elepidote rhododendrons (I-L)

'ILGONIS'

The variety was created from the cross ♀ 'Purple Splendour' x ♂ 'Panenka'. The cross was made in 1987. Selected in 2005, registered in 2015. Breeder Rihards Kondratovičs. 

Blooms in late May, early June. The growth is wide bushy. 25-year-old bush 1.7 m high and 2.2 m wide. 

The variety has good winter hardiness. Suitable for cultivation in the central and western parts of Latvia.

'ILMA'

The variety was created by crossing ♀ ‘Catawbiense Grandiflorum’ x ♂ ‘Mrs. Furnivall’. The crossing was carried out in 1978. The variety was selected in 1988, registered in 2009. Breeder Rihards Kondratovičs. 

Blooms in late May, early June. The variety forms a compact bush. Twenty-year-old bushes 2.2 m high, 3 m wide. 

Winter-hardy variety, useful for cultivation throughout the territory of Latvia.

'IMANTS'

The variety was created by crossing ♀ ‘Midsummer’ x ♂ ‘Elizabeth’. Crossbreeding in 1975. The variety was selected in 1989, registered in 2010. Breeder Rihards Kondratovičs. 

Blooms in early June. The cultivar forms a wide bush. In 25 years it reaches a height of 2 m, a width of 2.7 m. 

The variety has good winter hardiness. It is recommended to grow it along the coast of the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Riga, as well as in the central part of Latvia.

'INDRIĶIS'

The variety was created from seedlings of Catawba rhododendron ♀ 'Catawbiense Grandiflorum' in 1975. The variety was selected in 1981, registered in 2013. Breeder Rihards Kondratovičs. 

The variety blooms in early June. The growth is wide-bush-like. 25-year-old shrub 1.5 m high and 2.5 m wide. 

The variety has good winter hardiness. Suitable for cultivation throughout the territory of Latvia.

'IRINA'

The variety was created from the 1965 open-pollinated seedlings of 'Catawbiense Grandiflorum'. The variety was selected in 1975, registered in 2000. Breeder Rihards Kondratovičs. 

Blooms in late May, first half of June, very abundantly. Forms a compact bush. Twenty-year-old bushes 2 m high and 2 m wide. 

The variety has good winter hardiness, suitable for cultivation throughout the territory of Latvia.

'JĀNIS'

The variety was created by crossing ♀ ‘Catawbiense Garndiflorum’ X ♂ ‘Purple Splendour’. Crossbreeding from 1974. The variety was selected in 1994, registered in 2001. Breeder Rihards Kondartovičs. 

The variety blooms in late May, early June. Forms a compact bush. Twenty-year-old plants reach a height of 1.2 m. 

The variety has good winter hardiness. Recommended for cultivation in the central and western parts of Latvia.v

'JĀNIS SPROĢIS'

The variety was created by crossing ♀ ‘Nova Zembla’ x ♂ ‘Panenka’. The crossing was carried out in 1985. The variety was selected in 1995, registered in 2012. Breeder Rihards Kondartovičs. 

The variety blooms in late May, early June. The variety forms a strong, wide bushy growth. A 25-year-old bush is 2.3 m high and 3 m wide. 

The variety has satisfactory winter hardiness. Suitable for cultivation in the western and central parts of Latvia.

'JURĢIS ĀBELE'

The variety was obtained in 2007 by crossing the varieties ♀’Sprīdītis’ x ♂’Eduards Smiļģis’. Selected in 2014. Registered in the International Rhododendron Register in 2022. Breeder Gunita Riekstiņa. Created by order of entrepreneur Jurģis Ābele. 

Blooms in the second half of May, early June. The variety has purple flowers with dark spots on the upper petals. At fourteen years, the bush is 1.7 m high and 1.6 m wide. 

Recommended for cultivation in the central and western parts of Latvia.

‘KĀRLIS’

The variety was created from open-pollinated seedlings of ‘Catawbiense Grandiflorum’ from 1957. The variety was selected in 1967, registered in 2001. Breeder Rihards Kondratovičs. 

The variety blooms in late May, early June. Twenty-year-old bushes reach a height of 3 m and a width of 4 m. 

The variety has good winter hardiness. Suitable for cultivation throughout the territory of Latvia.

'KĀRLIS ULMANIS'

The variety was created from Rh. degronianum Carriere open-pollinated seedlings. The variety was selected in 1988, registered in 2007. Breeder Rihards Kondratovičs. 

The variety blooms in late May, early June. Forms a well-branched, compact bush. Twenty-year-old bushes 2.5 m high and 3 m wide. 

The variety has good winter hardiness, suitable for cultivation throughout the territory of Latvia.

'KRISTAPS MORBERGS'

The variety was created by crossing ♀ 'Purple Splendour' x ♂ 'Arnošt Silva-Tarouca'. Crossbreeding in 1985. The variety was selected in 1992, registered in 2014. Breeder Rihards Kondratovičs. 

Blooms in early June. Bushy growth. 28-year-old bush 2.3 m high and 2.3 m wide. 

The variety has good winter hardiness. Suitable for cultivation in the western and central parts of Latvia.

'LATVIJAI 100'

♀ 'Falling Snow' x ♂ 'Erato' 2006 cross. Selected in 2013, registered in 2018. Breeder Gunita Riekstiņa. 

Blooms in late May, early June. Growth is wide bushy. In 11 years the bush is 1.0 m high, 1.5 m wide. 

Winter hardiness is very good. The variety is suitable for cultivation throughout Latvia.

'LETTONIA'S ROBERTS RŪSIS'

'LIELAIS KRISTAPS'

The variety was created by crossing ♀ ‘Nova Zembla’ x ♂ ‘Panenka’. The crossing was carried out in 1985. The variety was selected in 2004, registered in 2020. Breeder Rihards Kondratovičs. 

Blooms in late May, early June. Growth is wide-bush. In twenty-four years, the bushes are 3.5 m high, 3.8 m wide.

'LITA'

The variety was created in 1973 by crossing ♀ 'Catawbiense Grandiflorum' x ♂ 'Mrs. P.D. Williams', selected in 1986, registered in 2000. Breeder Rihards Kondratovičs. 

Blooms in late May, first half of June, very abundantly. Forms a strong-growing shrub. Twenty-year-old shrubs reach 2.5 m in width and 2 m in height. 

Winter-hardy variety. Suitable for cultivation throughout Latvia.

'LĪGO'

The variety was created from open-pollinated seedlings of 'Catawbiense Grandiflorum' from 1957. The variety was selected in 1972, registered in 2000. Breeder Rihards Kondratovičs. 

The variety blooms later than other elepidote rhododendron varieties - in the second half of June. Forms a dense, compact bush. Twenty-year-old bushes reach a height of 2 m and a width of 3 m. 

The variety is characterized by good winter hardiness.

'LU 100'

♀ Rh. yakushimanum 'Koichiro Wada' 1997 seedling. Selected in 2013, registered in 2019. Breeder Rihards Kondratovičs. 

Blooms in the second half of May, early June. Growth is wide bushy. In 6 years the bush is 0.7 m high, 1.0 m wide. 

The variety is suitable for cultivation throughout Latvia. When growing in an open, sunny place, to protect against sunburn in winter and early spring, it is desirable to shade.

'LU BOTĀNISKAJAM DĀRZAM 100'

♀Rh. degronianum ssp. yakushimanum seedling. Selected in 2008. Registered in the International Rhododendron Register in 2022. Breeder Rihards Kondratovičs. Named in honor of the centenary of the Botanical Garden of the University of Latvia. 

Blooms in the second half of May, early June. It is a compact, densely branched shrub with white, bell-shaped flowers and yellow-green spots on the upper petals. In ten years, the shrub is 0.7 m high and 1 m wide. 

Winter hardiness is very good.

'LU ROLANDS'

The variety was created by crossing ♀ ‘Catawbiense Grandiflorum’ X ♂ ‘Purple Splendour’. The crossing was carried out in 1974. The variety was selected in 1995, registered in 2005. Breeder Rihards Kondratovičs. 

The variety blooms in early June. Twenty-year-old bushes 2 m high and 3 m wide.
