Elepidote rhododendrons (C-Ģ)

'CĪRAVA'

The variety was obtained by crossing ♀ Rh. yakushimanum ‘Koichiro Wada’ x ♂’Purple Splendour’. The crossing was carried out in 1974. The variety was selected in 1987, registered in 2016. Breeder Rihards Kondratovičs. 

Blooms in late May, early June. A second flowering has been observed in September. The variety is characterized by a wide bushy, compact growth, dense branching. At 40 years, the bush is 2.20 m high and 4 m wide. 

Good winter hardiness. The variety is suitable for cultivation in the central and western parts of Latvia.

'DACE'

The variety was created from 1962 open-pollinated seedlings of Smirnov's rhododendron (Rh. smirnowii Trautv.). The variety was selected in 1970, registered in 2001. Breeder Rihards Kondratovičs. 

Blooms in the second half of May. Forms a symmetrical, dense, compact bush. Twenty-year-old plants reach 2 m in height and 2.2 m in width. 

The variety has good winter hardiness. Suitable for cultivation in the central regions of Latvia and along the coast of the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Riga.

'DAGNIJA'

The variety was created by crossing ♀’Sprīdītis’ x ♂’Erato’. The crossing was carried out in 2007. The variety was selected in 2014, registered in 2021. Breeder Gunita Riekstiņa. 

Blooms in late May, early June. At the age of thirteen, the bush reaches a height of 1.3 m and a width of 1.3 m. 

Recommended for cultivation in the central and western parts of Latvia.

'DĀVIDS HIERONĪMS GRINDELIS'

♀ R74-085/14 x ♂ ‘Miks’ 2005 cross, selected in 2013, registered in 2019. Breeder Gunita Riekstiņa. 

Blooms in late May. Growth is wide bushy. At 13 years, the bush is 1.1 m high, 1.3 m wide. 

Winter hardiness is very good. The variety is suitable for cultivation throughout Latvia.

'DIMASH QUDAIBERGEN'

The variety was created by crossing ♀’Sprīdītis’ x ♂’Erato’. The crossing was carried out in 2007. The variety was selected in 2014, registered in 2021. Breeder Gunita Riekstiņa. 

Blooms in late May, first half of June. At the age of thirteen, the bush grows 1.3 m high and 1.5 m wide. 

Recommended for cultivation in the central and western parts of Latvia. 

Named after the popular Kazakh singer Dimash Kudaibergen at the suggestion of the fan club “Dimash Latvia Dears”.

'DOKTORS BABARIKINS'

The variety was created by crossing ♀ 'Scandinavia' x ♂ 'Mrs. R. G. Shaw'. The crossing was made in 1974. The variety was selected in 1983, registered in 2013. Breeder Rihards Kondratovičs. 

Blooms in the first half of June. Rhododendron with a large, wide bushy growth. 25-year-old shrub 3 m high and 4 m wide. 

Winter-hardy variety, suitable for cultivation throughout the territory of Latvia.

'DZEGUZĒNS'

The variety was selected in 2007 from the 1995 seed plants of the variety 'Babītes Kristīne'. Registered in 2017. Breeder Rihards Kondratovičs. 

Blooms in the second half of May. The growth is wide-bush-like. In twenty years it reaches 1.4 m in height and 2.1 m in width. 

Suitable for cultivation in the western and central parts of Latvia.

'DZIDRA'

The variety is a 1978 seedling of the Catawba rhododendron 'Catawbiense Grandiflorum'. Selected in 1998, approved in 2013. Breeder Rihards Kondratovičs. 

Blooms in late May, very abundantly. Rhododendron with a wide bush-like growth. Twenty-year-old bushes 1.6 m high and 2.5 m wide.

The variety has good winter hardiness, therefore it is suitable for cultivation throughout Latvia.

'EDUARDS SMIĻĢIS'

The variety was obtained by crossing ♀ 'Catawbiense Grandiflorum' x ♂ 'Purple Splendour', a 1974 cross. The variety was selected in 1980, registered in 2001. Breeder Rihards Kondratovičs. 

Blooms in late May, early June. The bush is wide-shrubby. Twenty-year-old bushes 2 m high and 3 m wide. 

The variety has good winter hardiness. It is desirable to grow in places along the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Riga, as well as in the central part of the country.

'EGONS'

The variety was created from open-pollinated seedlings of ‘Catawbiense Grandiflorum’ in 1969. Selected in 1975, registered in 2010. Breeder Rihards Kondratovičs. 

Blooms in late May, early June. Strongly growing, wide shrub. The shrub is 2 m high and 2 m wide in 20 years. 

Winter hardiness is satisfactory. Suitable for cultivation in central Latvia and along the coast of the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Riga.

'ELZA RADZIŅA'

The variety was created by crossing ♀ 'Purple Splendour' x ♂ 'Arnošt Silva-Tarouca' in 1984. The variety was selected in 1991, registered in 2014. Breeder Rihards Kondratovičs. 

Blooms in late May, early June. Narrow, upright shrub. Grows 3.5 m high and 2.5 m wide in 29 years. 

Suitable for cultivation in western Latvia.

'EMERITUS'

The variety was created by crossing ♀ ‘Scandinavia’ x ♂ ‘Philip Martineau’. The crossing was carried out in 1976. The variety was selected in 1989, registered in 2003. Breeder Rihards Kondratovičs. 

Blooms in June. Forms a symmetrical bush. Twenty-year-old plants 2 m high and 2 m wide. 

The variety has good winter hardiness. Suitable for cultivation in the central part of Latvia and along the coastal zone of the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Riga.

'EMĪLS'

The variety was created by crossing ♀ ‘Catawbiense Grandiflorum’ X ♂ ‘Purple Splendour’. The crossing was carried out in 1974. The variety was selected in 1982, registered in 2001. Breeder Rihards Kondratovičs. 

Blooms in late May, early June. Twenty-year-old bushes 1.8 m high and 2 m wide. 

The variety has good winter hardiness. Suitable for cultivation in the central and western parts of Latvia.

'ENZO ĀBELE'

The variety was created in 2006 by crossing the varieties ♀’Babītes Kompaktais’ x ♂’Erato’. Selected in 2014. Registered in the International Rhododendron Register in 2022. Breeder Gunita Riekstiņa. Created by order of entrepreneur Jurģis Ābele. 

Blooms in the second half of May, early June. It is a strong shrub with purple flowers and dark spots on the upper petals. In sixteen years it reaches a height of 1.8 m and a width of 2.3 m. 

Winter hardiness is very good.

'FEJA'

The variety was created by crossing ♀ ‘Purple Splendour’ x ♂ ‘A. Silva Tarouca’. The crossing was carried out in 1984. The variety was selected in 1995, registered in 2005. Breeder Rihards Kondratovičs. 

Blooms in late May, early June. Forms a symmetrical bush. Twenty-year-old plants 1.8 m high and 1.8 m wide. 

The variety has good winter hardiness. Suitable for cultivation in the western and central parts of Latvia.

'ĢENERĀLIS'

Seedling of the variety 'Doctor H. C. Dresselhuys', 1981, selected in 1993, registered in 2017. Breeder Rihards Kondratovičs. 

Blooms in late May, early June. Narrow bushy growth. In thirty years, reaches 3.0 m in height and 2.5 m in width. 

Good winter hardiness, suitable for cultivation throughout the territory of Latvia.
