Slava Ukrainai

Breeders of UL Experimental Rhododendron Breeding Nursery "Babīte" have received certificates for seven new rhododendron varieties included in the International Register of Rhododendron Varieties.

Celebrating the centenary of the Botanical Garden of the University of Latvia, the elepidote rhododendron variety "LU Botāniskajam Dārzam 100" was created. It is a variety with a compact, densely branched bush and white bell-shaped flowers.

The profusely blooming deciduous rhododendron variety "Slava Ukrainai" with fragrant, bright yellow flowers is named in support of the Ukrainian people in their fight against the invaders.

Five new varieties of elepidote rhododendrons were created by order of entrepreneur Jurģis Ābele.

"Jurģis Ābele" is a variety with purple flowers and expressive, dark spots on the upper petals inside the flower.

The variety "Baiba Ābele" has beautiful, white flowers with folded edges of the petals and yellowish-green spots on the upper petals.

"Aleksandra Daniela Ābele" is a variety with a compact, densely branched bush and pink funnel-shaped flowers that bloom profusely in the second half of May.

The variety "Enzo Ābele" is characterized by a bush of strong growth and purple flowers with a dark spot inside the flowers.

"Bruno Ābele" is a thick bush with large leaves and large flowers of light purple color, which are decorated with yellow-green spots inside.

Since 1999, a total of 138 rhododendron varieties created at the University of Latvia have been registered in the International Register of Rhododendron Varieties in Great Britain.
